What is the Lymphatic System?

Your body contains about 50% more lymphatic fluid than blood. Your lymphatic system is actually a vital transportation system with an extensive network of over 600 vessels throughout the body. The Lymphatic or "lymph" system is commonly known as the waste disposal system of the body. It is often referred to as the "secondary circulatory system" and flows throughout the entire body. It is through the Lymphatic System that toxic substances move out of the body through the bloodstream and colon.  There is no pump, such as the heart, to move lymph fluid throughout the body.

Why Is Lymphatic System Maintenance Important for Your health?

A condition of stagnation occurs when your Lymphatic System is blocked or clogged, promoting fatigue and ill health. Some of the most common symptoms include swelling, bumps, lumps and pain. An impaired lymphatic system may result in colds, flu, and sinus problems, edema and excessive water retention, heart conditions, fibrocystic and tender breasts, cellulite, stubborn weight, and other conditions.

What Causes the Lymphatic System to Become Clogged or Blocked?

The heart/circulatory system has a pump to keep fluids flowing throughout the body. The Lymphatic System has no pump to maintain fluid movement. Some causes of a sluggish or blocked lymph system are due in part to ingested toxins, stress, anxiety, lack of exercise, improper diet, and repressed emotions.

What are Lymph Nodes?

All small and medium-sized lymph vessels open into lymph nodes are situated in strategic positions throughout the body. The lymph fluid drains through a number of nodes, usually 8 to 10, before returning to the blood. These nodes may be as small as a pin head. The largest are about the size of an almond. Lymph nodes exist in every part of the body, however, they tend to be gathered in five major groups:

  • Mastoid and Sub occipital nodes of the head and face and Cervical lymph nodes of the neck and  clavicles

  • Axillary lymph nodes under both arms

  • Cisterna Chyli along the sternum or breast bond

  • Inguinal lymph nodes of the groin area

  • Popliteal nodes behind the knees

Inflammatory diseases and malignancies generally show an enlargement of these nodes. Some palpation (touching) may be needed as a part of discovering lymphatic blockages. The palpation may include the neck, armpits, and groin areas.
